Romancier si poet scotian. Primele sale lucrari au fost traduceri ale unor balade germane si antologii de balade scotiene; acestora le-au urmat poeme narative personale, precum Balada ultimului menestrel (The lay of the Last Minstrel, 1805), Marmion (1808) si Doamna lacului (The Lady of the Lake, 1810). A dobandit un renume european pentru romanele sale istorice, cum ar fi Waverley (1814), Rob Roy (1817), Cantece de la fruntariile Scotiei (The Heart of Midlothian, 1818) si Ivanhoe (1819), toate publicate anonim.
