Fiul lui Andropompus. A fost gonit din Pylos, pamantul sau de bastina, de catre heraclizi si s-a stabilit in Athenae. Acolo, regele Thymoetes purta un razboi impotriva beotienilor. Melanthus s-a oferit sa lupte singur - din partea atenienilor - impotriva regelui beotian, Xanthus. Lupta a fost hotaratoare. Melanthus l-a invins pe Xanthus si, drept rasplata, Thymoetes i-a cedat tronul sau.
